The America's Cup, seen from the water

For six days the Gulf of Naples becomes the racecourse. From the spectator zone, just outside the course, you see the boats take off and hear the race radio. A local skipper explains what is happening.

Every boat sails one of these formats. What is on board, the hours and the rules are the same; the price is each owner's own, and so is the boat.

22-24 September

Practice racing, a day on board

The three practice days on the AC40s, seen from the water. Starts from 14:10.

Three days before the scoreboard opens: the boats work on starts and manoeuvres, the course is less crowded, and from the spectator area you see the manoeuvre repeated until it comes out right.

25-27 September

Race days, spectator area

The three race days on the AC40s, from the spectator area. The match race final is on the 27th.

The days that count: three races each, the fleet on the same course and the race radio on board. On the 27th the match race final closes the regatta.

America's Cup sunset aperitivo

Two and a half hours under sail after the racing, with Vesuvius behind you.

Not part of the official programme: the Gulf after the racing, when the fleet comes back in and the city lights up from the water.

The six days

Three days of practice racing, then three race days. Every day has three starts — group A at 14:10, group B at 14:46, group C at 15:27 — and the match race final is on the 27th, from 15:30.

Race Day Two. It is the Saturday, the day that fills up first.

Race Day Three, the last day: the scheduled races and, from 15:30, the match race final.

A seat on a shared boat, or the whole boat for your group.

Card payment, immediate confirmation. No waiting for a reply.

Meeting point and time are on the confirmation. Bring light-soled shoes.

What if the racing is cancelled?

The outing moves to another race day. If that is not possible, half is refunded.

Can I get an invoice?

From owners with a VAT number, yes — they are marked with the invoice badge. The others issue a receipt, which is what occasional charter allows.

Do I need sailing experience?

No. There is always a skipper on board; you can take the helm if you want to.

What is the minimum to depart?

A shared outing sails with at least six guests. If it does not fill up, it is cancelled and refunded in full.
